UPDATE (07/20/2020) Fire authorities reported that the Veyo West fire was 90 percent contained Monday evening. Firefighters were mopping up hot spots, and rehabilitation work has started on some areas of the fire’s perimeter.
The fire will likely transition to a smaller, local, type 4 fire.

As of 7 p.m., the Veyo West Fire was mapped at 2,618 acres. The fire is seventy-five percent contained. Hand crews continue securing and strengthening fire lines. The fire is burning through dry brush, grass, and timber. Fire managers continue to monitor structures in the immediate vicinity and are continuing to protect the utility corridor. The fire is being managed by a Type III team.
Minimal, smoldering. The fire has not moved significantly for the last 48 hours.
The area of the National Forest System land east of Forest Road 859 and land to the west of the road, along the Forest’s south boundary, and land west of the Forest’s east boundary and land south of Forest Service Road 845 remain closed.
UPDATE: July 16 8:30 p.m. The Veyo West fire is now 40% contained. Fire officials have confirmed the fire was human-caused. There are no evacuations at this time.
It is still mapped at 2,618 acres. Two structures have been destroyed, and others are being threatened. The fire has not had significant movement for the last 36 hours.
UPDATE: July 15 7:30 p.m. According to fire officials, the Veyo West Fire, is at 2618 acres burned after an Infrared flight mapped the fire perimeter.
The fire is currently 20 percent contained.
Fire crews managed to hold the perimeter during the winds in the afternoon and improve containment lines.
UPDATE: 10 a.m. Officials confirm one primary residence was burned in the fire. The fire estimated at 2,900 acres.
UPDATE: At 2:00 a.m., evacuations were lifted for Brookside and portions of west Veyo. SR-18 is back open. The fire still stands around 1,100 acres and 0% containment.
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Utah fire crews are responding to fire near Veyo Monday evening. Veyo lies along State Route 18 about 20 miles north of St. George.
State fire officials say the fire, dubbed the Veyo West Fire, is about 50 acres and threatening the west side of the community. Evacuation for the westside of town and Brookside.
Firefighters are battling the fire amid hot, dry conditions ripe for flames to spread quickly. State officials describe the situation as “very active fire behavior with a strong resistance to suppression efforts.”
Officials say additional air and ground resources have been requested to fight the fire.
SR-18 is closed at mile marker 20 due to the fire. Secondary roads west of SR-18 and north of Gunlock Road are also closed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
