Flight attendant rescues minor from human trafficking

Alaska Airlines vet Shelia Fedrick, 49, saved a teenage girl from human trafficking by strategically leaving a secret message in the bathroom mid-flight.

After numerous red flags and awkward exchanges between the man and the victim, Fedrick began inspecting the pair to understand what was going on aboard the aircraft.  After several failed attempts at communicating with the young girl, Fedrick decided to leave a paper and pencil in the stall with the hope that the victim would explain her situation; she wrote back on the note saying, “I need help.”  Fedrick tactfully alerted the pilot and when the plane landed in San Francisco, police entered the cabin and arrested the man.

Although this incredible story has a happy ending, the same cannot be said for everyone.  Human trafficking is a rising epidemic in the United States, with a 35.7% increase in 2016 according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

It is essential for us, as members of society to be constantly aware of our surroundings and be willing to take action when necessary.  We owe it to each other. Fedrick said she went with her gut. What a lesson to learn from. Trust yourself, because most of the time your instincts are right.
