ELKO, Nev. (News4Utah)-  Just three hours from Salt Lake City, Lamoille Canyon is the escape you’ve been looking for.

The quiet canyon is tucked away in the Ruby Mountains located 35 minutes outside of Elko, Nev.

Tom Lester, the chair of the Silver State’s Cowboy County Territory and manager of the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority, took News4Utah on a tour of the area.

“We’re known as the Alps of Nevada,” said Lester. “Definitely the beauty all in its own. We get the high waterfalls off the high cliffs here in the spring and we get the beautiful fall colors in the fall.”

There are more than 25 alpine lakes housed in the glacially carved canyon. The canyon boasts more than 100 miles of hiking trails where visitors can go mountain biking, horseback riding, and even rock climbing.

“If you don’t want to be around a lot of people, you can camp up here. It’s beautiful. It’s only a short drive from Salt Lake City, We’re right in your backyard, just three hours away,” Lester said.

The 12-mile drive up the two-lane Lamoille Canyon is by itself worth the trip.

Lester says the area is the perfect place to visit year round. The deep winter powder is great for snowmobiling and skiing.
