Tyler Huntley drawing impressive comparisons

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The Utes are off to a 3-0 start, thanks in large part to the play of sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley.

Through three games, Huntley has thrown for 868 yards, five touchdowns, while completing 52 percent of his passes. He has also rushed for 212 yards and 3 more touchdowns.

“Tyler Huntley had another big night,” said head coach Kyle Whittingham about Huntley’s performance against San Jose State. “Nearly 400 yards of total offense. He’s throwing the ball exceptionally well, over 70 percent completion percentage, which is outstanding. He’s a good decision maker, a very good decision maker. He’s had a couple of throws that I know he wishes he had back this year, but as I said, over 70 percent completion. If we can keep that trend, we’re going to have a very successful year.”

And that’s not the only praise Huntley is receiving. On Saturday night, his receiver Darren Carrington compared Huntley to another quarterback he’s played with at Oregon, Heisman trophy winner and Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota.

“He reminds me of Marcus a lot,” said Carrington, who caught three touchowns against the Spartans. “Just how he can run and throw off the run and throw off his back foot like 70 yards if he wants to make people miss. He’s just a ball player.”

“Well, they’re certainly comparable in their athleticism, and the way that they’re a true dual threat,” said Whittingham. “That’s a pretty favorable comparison because Marcus Mariota was amongst the first players taken in the draft a few years ago, so that speaks to what Tyler’s shown so far.”

Huntley was flattered by the comparison.

“That’s a lot of love from Carrington,” Huntley said. “That’s amazing that he compared me to Mariota, and I just hope that I live up to it.”

“Marcus was very accurate, as is Tyler and so yeah I think there’s some merit to that,” added Whittingham. “It’s still really early in Tyler’s career. He has a lot of football left to play for us. But what we’ve seen so far has been very positive.”

The 23rd-ranked Utes open Pac-12 play Friday night at Arizona.
