The Chiefs pulled off a primetime win over the Jets that ended up being far closer than fans had anticipated. Kansas City escaped with a 23-20 win to improve to 3-1 on the year, but their victory wasn’t without controversy.
In addition to a questionable defensive holding call against Sauce Gardner, which wiped away an interception, Jets defensive lineman Jermaine Johnson was inexplicably held for a stunning length of time on a play that resulted in a 25-yard run for Patrick Mahomes.
Somehow, the officials seemed to not notice Johnson being held for multiple seconds by Donovan Smith. The missed hold would likely explain why Mahomes had so much time in the pocket, which he eventually used to slither free for a first down run.
NFL fans were in utter disbelief over the missed call, which appeared from the broadcast to be blatantly obvious.
I actually started cheering when I saw the flag icon pop up because I was sure it was for the hold on Johnson. https://t.co/omCTdrF7Qk— Glenn Naughton (@JNRadio_Glenn) October 2, 2023
The refs have not only robbed the Jets a chance to win. But have robbed the world of a Zach Wilson game winning drive. https://t.co/DerJKuF2Rc— Joey Ertl (@Jertl11) October 2, 2023

He was held for a solid like 8 seconds… it was obvious.. and he was complaining about being held during this time and still no flag.. amazing https://t.co/vXW4TtcpbY— Kev (@klew24) October 2, 2023
I thought that's the reason the flag was thrown lol— Alex (@GreatRajsel) October 2, 2023
