SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Real Salt Lake battled German club Eintracht Frankfurt to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly Tuesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
RSL took the lead after just 10 minutes when Joao Plata found an onrushing Andrew Brody inside the box and he slammed the ball home near the penalty spot for the go-ahead goal. RSL would continue to press in the attacking third throughout the half but was unable to double its advantage.
The start of the second half saw a physical affair ensue as RSL frustrated Eintracht’s back line went in an attempt to find its second goal. Eintracht leveled the match in second-half stoppage time when Nicolai Müller headed home a corner kick past goalkeeper Andrew Putna to level the match at a goal apiece.
“I thought the guys who went out there did an excellent job.,” said head coach Mike Petke. “You guys know me well enough that I talk a lot about doing the things that we talk about. Tonight they did it for a large chunk of it. It’s a good team we played against in both halves. The one thing I liked was the times that we lost it a little bit and they gained momentum, we got the momentum back eventually. There were a lot of very good individual performances. As a whole, to be honest with you, I think we moved well together. We counter-attacked well together. We possessed the ball together. I’m pleased. I’m very pleased with the performances tonight.”
Real Salt Lake returns to MLS action on Saturday when it visits Minnesota United with kick off set for 6:00 p.m. MT from TCF Bank Stadium.
