Woman and Three Children Carjacked at Gunpoint in Taylorsville

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC4 News) A man has been arrested after carjacking a woman and her three children at gunpoint in Taylorsville Saturday night. 

Unified Police said the incident unfolded just before 8 p.m. when 31-year old David Lee Haehnel  was reported to be driving a Ford F-150 recklessly on I-215 before crashing into an embankment as he exited on Redwood Road near 5700 South.  

Witnesses said Haehnel then exited the truck and approached a woman driving a black Dodge Durango nearby, produced a firearm and ordered her and three children out of the car. 

The suspect left in the Durango and an attempt to locate the suspect was issued. Salt Lake City police located the Durango in the area of North Temple and followed the vehicle but lost sight of it in the area of 400 South 400 West.

Metro Gang Detectives continued to investigate and were able to locate the unoccupied Durango in the area of 1000 South 900 West.  

Haehnel, who matched the description of the suspect, was located at a residence near 1000 West Jeremy St. in Salt Lake City. Detectives surrounded the house and Haehnel surrendered without further incident.

Haehnel was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
