What You Need To Know About Belgium Attacks

As the situation in Belgium unfolds, a lot of questions still need to be answered.

Ryan Vogel, the Director of National Security at Utah Valley University, joined Good Morning Utah with his insight.

Vogel says Belgium has seen a high number of citizens join and fight for ISIS in Syria and Iraq – and many are now coming home.  This has presented Belgian authorities with a difficult counterterrorism situation at home.

In addition, Belgium is home to NATO headquarters and the capital of the European Union.  Belgium is also part of the international coalition fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria.  ISIS is unlike other terrorist groups, because it is decentralized and ideology-focused.
Vogel says that unfortunately, it is likely that we will see more of these attacks on “soft targets.”
Americans can help by remaining vigilant and alerting authorities to suspicious activities.
