PARLEY’S CANYON, Utah (ABC4) – A carjacking at the Salt Lake City Airport led to “a trail of destruction” toward Parley’s Canyon, according to Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD).

Brent Weisburg with SLCPD told ABC4 the incident started just after 5 a.m. when officers received reports of a “disorderly passenger,” who later was identified as 20-year-old John Joseph Thomas Green. Green was reportedly upset and “combative” because he was unable to secure a same-day flight out Salt Lake International Airport to Denver, Colorado.

Green allegedly went to the tollbooth area of the airport as officers headed to the airport terminal, stole an occupied SUV and took off. After leaving the airport, Green allegedly crashed into a silver car near 900 west and 2100 south, did a u-turn, and crashed into white BMW SUV.

Weisburg told ABC4, Green got out of his vehicle and tried to car jack the BMW. A woman was reportedly in the second car on her way to work, was wearing her seatbelt and resisted Green, who eventually gave up and took off in the original car he allegedly stole.

Police say the man took off toward South Salt Lake before allegedly crashing the original SUV into another car and nearly hitting a building. The man then allegedly carjacked a black Dodge Durango before getting on I-80 and into Parley’s Canyon, where he was apprehended around 6:15 a.m. after crashing into several cars.

Weisburg told ABC4 police are still trying to piece together how many crashes and victims were involved. No serious injuries have been reported in relation to the series of incidents.

Green was reportedly taken to a local hospital for observation, but SLCPD said he will be booked into the Summit County Jail on “multiple felony charges.”

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

ORIGINAL STORY: Carjacked vehicle led to ‘several crashes’ in Parley’s Canyon

Friday, November 4 // 8:51 a.m.

PARLEY’S CANYON, Utah (ABC4) – A carjacking led to “several” crashes in Parley’s Canyon and a man in custody early Friday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) said it received calls of multiple crashes on eastbound I-80 at Parley’s Canyon just before 6 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. UHP says a 20-year-old man driving a carjacked black Dodge Durango from Salt Lake County was driving recklessly through the canyon.

The Durango reportedly crashed near milepost 148, prompting the driver to get out and allegedly attempt to carjack eastbound vehicles. When his attempts were unsuccessful, UHP says the driver threw a rock at a westbound vehicle and attempted to carjack that vehicle. A Summit County deputy arrived at that point and took him into custody.

“Right now, there could be up to five crashes, one of them being a rollover near Parley’s summit,” Utah Highway Patrol said in a release. Two crashes had individuals taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities say multiple agencies are working on different aspects of the case and an investigation is ongoing, including impairment involvement.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update as more information becomes available.
