LAS VEGAS (ABC4 Sports) – For the first ten minutes of the game, it looked like Utah State would be able to pull off its third straight win at the Mountain West Tournament, as they led New Mexico by eight points.
But then the Lobos kicked it in gear, and went on a 41-10 run to take control of the semifinal game, and ended the Aggies season with an 83-68 victory.
Sam Merrill led the Aggies with 17 points, while Koby McEwen added 16 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop the red hot Lobos, who won their 7th straight game.
New Mexico will face San Diego State in the tournament championship game on Saturday.
After taking a 20-12 lead ten minutes into the game, the Aggies hit a dry spell, and New Mexico took a 37-25 lead at the half.
Troy Simons led the Lobos with 17 points, while Sam Logwood and Joe Furstinger each added 16.
Coming off victories over Colorado State and Boise State, the Aggies looked to tire out against New Mexico, and shot just 42 percent from the field.
Utah State played without DeAngelo Isby, who left the team this morning for personal reasons.
Utah State is hopeful of a postseason bid, as they fall to 17-17 on the season.
