Utah Officer is Part Policeman and Part Teacher

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 UTAH) When he’s not tracking down criminals – You will find him in a classroom teaching kids about law enforcement. In this week’s ABC4 UTAH Behind the Badge profile we get to know Detective Cody Lougy.

Monday thru Friday morning you will find Detective Cody Lougy front and center in a high school classroom. The Salt Lake City Detective teaches two classes everyday at the Career Technical Center, before going to work for the Salt Lake City Police Department. “I do it because of the challenge, the excitement and for the service – to give back. I enjoy making a difference.” Detective Lougy has been doing that for years. And
he’s also very involved in Salt Lake’s Police Explorer program – which teaches teens about police operations and careers in law enforcement. In fact, one of his former students is Officer Ben Hone. Last year Hone saved two women who were being attacked and received the Medal of Valor and was named officer of the year. “He went into law enforcement because of my class and because of the ride-alongs we took him on. It just kind of stuck with him and this career stuck with him.” He says both the class he teaches and the police Explorer program are pretty popular. “With the anti-cop sentiment going around the nation, I really thought our numbers would drop, but they’ve actually increased. Its interesting to me that students want to learn about careers in law enforcement and still want to learn about what we do on a daily basis.”
Today he teaches and investigates, but Detective Lougy has covered all kinds of jobs during his 20 year career. “I’ve worked a lot of assignments. I’ve worked Homicide, and special victims, burglary – a motor cop.” He worked in St. George for a couple of years before ays its always been about having a positive impact on everyone he deals with. And he says teaching provides him an opportunity everyday. “For me, that’s the biggest reward.”  And recently

Serving and Protecting runs in the family. Detective Lougy’s son is in the police academy and starts working for West Valley City in November.
