Utah and BYU women’s basketball teams both ranked in top-25

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – Women’s basketball is reaching new heights in the state of Utah.

Following Sunday’s historic first-ever win over 6th-ranked Stanford, the Utes women’s team moved up to #14 in the country in the latest Associated Press poll, their highest ranking since 2008.

Meantime, the BYU women’s team has won 11 straight games, and the Cougars cracked the top-25 for the first time since 2012, coming in at #25.

This is the first time since 2006 that both Utah and BYU have been ranked at the same time.

“I’m so proud of our team,” Utah head coach Lynne Roberts said following their 75-68 victory over Stanford at the Huntsman Center. “We continue to to just chip away. I think this win is so big because of who Stanford is and what they’ve done. So, great team win, great program win.”

“I didn’t see any wavering or nervousness,” said Utah guard Erika Bean, who poured in a career-high 23 points. “Everyone was locked in. We had a minute to go and we wanted to get that win.”

Utah improved to 18-1 on the year, with their only loss coming to Arizona State on a buzzer beater. Megan Huff, who was named Pac-12 player of the week says the Utes have gained respect around the country.

“We’re a tough team,” Huff said. “Like we were saying before the game, teams have to beat us. It’s not like we have to only focus on beating them, they have to beat us too.”

But the Pac-12 gauntlet continues as the Utes face two more top-10 teams this week at 4th-ranked Oregon and #9 Oregon State.

“This win certainly helps with confidence,” Roberts said. “It’s like, OK, we can hang. There’s not a sense of pressure. We’re always just, we’re alright, here we go, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing.”

BYU’s 11-game winning streak is tied for third longest in program history. BYU had a 16-game win streak during the 2015-16 season and a 12-0 run during the 2010-11 campaign. In 2005-06 they went on an 11-0 run.

BYU, which leads the West Coast Conference at 9-0, 17-3 overall, travels to southern California this week for games at Loyola Marymount on Thursday, and at Pepperdine on Saturday.
