WASHINGTON COUNTY (News4Utah) – A Toquerville man will spend a year in jail for failing to protect his 12-year-old child from an abusive mother.

Tuesday in court Russell Jaynes pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony child abuse charge.

For two years, the boy was locked up in a bathroom of the Jaynes home. When investigators finally responded the child weighed just 30 pounds.

“He has great remorse for what has occurred. He has been cooperative with law enforcement throughout the investigation. He has engaged in—took a proactive effort in getting the treatment and counseling needed,” said Deputy County Attorney Angie Reddish-Day told Newsradio 94.9/890 KDXU St. George.

The boy’s mother, Brandy Jaynes was sentenced to prison last in August.
