Utah philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr. funeral announced

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) The funeral for the founder of the Huntsman Cancer Institute Jon Huntsman Sr. will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. the Huntsman Center at the University of Utah.

Huntsman, 80, a successful businessman, was the founder and longtime executive chairman of Huntsman Corp., a $13 billion company that refines raw materials that go into thousands of products. 

Jon M. and Karen Huntsman founded the Huntsman Cancer Institute in 1995 with the vision to “ease the suffering of those carrying the heavy burden of cancer.”  The research center located in Salt Lake City is dedicated to finding a cure for the disease through human genetics. 

The institute released a statement Friday afternoon stating that Huntsman “created a movement that stands as a dare to cancer.” 

Governor Gary Herbert calls Huntsman “one of the greatest Utahns ever to live.” 

He was a “champion of business and philanthropy, but also a tremendous champion of our state. His loyalty to Utah was remarkable,” said Herbert in a statement Friday. 

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement about Huntsman’s death Friday.

“We share today in the grief of the Huntsman family. We honor Jon as a cherished husband, father and friend, esteemed as a leader for his exceptional capacity, commitment, philanthropy and service throughout the world. We express our love to Karen, to their children and family. Jon’s legacy of faithful leadership, generosity and goodness stands as a beacon for the entire Huntsman family and many others throughout the world.”

Reaction and condolences are pouring in from people across the state as news of Huntsman’s death spreads throughout the community.
