Utah County man sets climbing record

MOUNT TIMPANOGOS, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A 75-year-old Utah County man set a new climbing record this weekend.

Ben Woolsey climed Mount Timpanogos for the 900th time on Saturday. When asked why he does it, Woolsey told Good4Utah, “I love being out in the forest. I hate going to the gym. I enjoy the scenery, people, flowers and animals and its different every day I’m up here.”

Woolsey is a retired letter carrier. He sometimes hikes the trail two times and day and does it several times in a week. Even at his age, Ben keeps watch on some of the not so experienced climbers.

“I feel kind of responsible for people so I carry extra water, food, knee braces and different things like that,” Woolsey said.

Two years ago, he became the first man with 700 climbs. He’s now the only man to do it 900 times. He’s still going strong as his next goal is to get to a thousand climbs.
