SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A small gathering Sunday in Salt Lake City for a very big award.

It was the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award in honor of the leader of India who so passionately promoted peaceful ways for solving differences.

The award went to Aden Batar, who is in charge of the refugee program for Catholic Community Services. For 25 years, he has fought valiantly to bring refugees to Utah and protect their rights and identity.

Batar and his family are the first refugees from Somalia to ever come to Utah.
