SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A 32-year-old man is dead after a shooting near the Rio Grande homeless shelter Thursday night.
Police say an officer in the area of 500 West 200 South heard the gunshots and responded to the area just about 10 p.m. When the officer arrived, they found a man had been shot. He was transported to the hospital where he later died.
Hours later police arrested the man they believe is responsible for the shooting. They say he initially fled the scene.
Both the victim and the suspect were undocumented immigrants, Detective Greg Wilking with SLCPD told ABC4 Friday. Neither were homeless, but were in the area using transients for their drug-dealing operations.
The victim was in some sort of disagreement with suspect. There were several witnesses but police say as in most cases in this area, the credibility of the witnesses doesn’t necessarily lead them to more answers.
Police are not saying what lead to the argument between the two and have not yet identified either of them.
This is just one of several deadly shootings near the shelter over recent weeks as lawmakers continue to scramble to find answers to cleaning up the area.
His identity has not yet been released.
