PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A different kind of conference was held today in Utah County involving members of the LDS faith.

Today was the 40th anniversary of Affirmation, a support group for gay Mormons. Back in 1977, Affirmation was known more as an underground group.

This year, more than a thousand people from all over the world attended the event at the Utah Valley Convention Center.

Aaron McManus, with Affirmation, told Good4Utah, “People come who are very active while others don’t have anything to do with the church anymore, so we accomodate everything in between.”

The conference continues Sunday. Affirmation began at BYU as a simple effort by activists to assure gay Mormons that they are loved and not alone.
