SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Hundreds of Utah kids got new mattresses thanks to a Utah-based retailer as part of a giving campaign during the month of November.

80 mattresses were delivered Monday to East High School for its Family Support Initiative, to help their students in need. A second delivery of 100 mattresses was then made to Vantage Point Youth Services in Provo, who serves youth 10 years and older.

DownEast Home & Clothing, a Utah-based retailer, is donating more than 500 mattresses to children in need in seven cities over the next two weeks.

DownEast designed a “mattress on the go” specifically for those living in transient conditions. Lightweight, foldable, transportable, and easy to wash, this mattress-bed is not for sale but used specifically for donations. The initiative is fueled by their customers – each time a DownEast mattress is sold in stores or online, a “Mattress on the Go” will be donated to a child in need.

DownEast co-founder Bill Freedman , East High School Principal Greg Maughan and program director Kris Barta were on hand during the event at East High and Janene Candalot, program manager, Vantage Point Youth facility, met with Freedman in Provo for the donations.

The idea has been promoted widely because the company understands a good night’s promotes growth, reduces stress, improves emotional health, increases attention span, and boosts learning, however, thousands of homeless children in our communities regularly go without a good night’s sleep.
