Field fire threatens homes in Sandy

SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – There were tense moments in a Sandy neighborhood Saturday afternoon as a field fire burned dangerously close towards homes.

The blaze started near 11800 South and 1700 East.

It started burning up the hillside and, at one point, burned the fence in one home’s backyard.

Chris Dawson, the Chief for Sandy Fire, told ABC4, “If we would have had any winds at all with the upslope toward the homes and the vegetation in the backyard, there is a very good chance we would have lost multiple homes.”

Authorities think a juvenile playing with fireworks started the blaze.

As a reminder, it is now illegal to shoot off fireworks again until July 21.
