OXFORD, England (ABC4 Utah) – An apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is looking back at the Watergate scandal and how it could have been avoided.
More than 40 years ago President Richard Nixon resigned for his role in trying to cover-up a break-in at Democratic headquarters in the Watergate complex.
Elder D. Todd Christofferson, of The Quorum of The Twelve Apostles, was then a law clerk for a federal judge handling the case.
This week he spoke at Britain’s Oxford University.
Said Elder Christofferson, “It seemed to me there were many points along the way where Nixon, with an awakened conscience, could have called a halt saying this is not right. We will not continue. Let the chips fall where they may.”
He says he believes if Nixon would have come clean, he could have finished his full term as President.
