UTE MOUNTAIN UTE RESERVATION, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Saturday is the deadline on the controversial Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah.
It’s the end of the review period. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke will make a recommendation to President Trump to keep Bears Ears, reduce it in size or eliminate it.
ABC 4 Utah has learned that the decision will probably be released Monday.
Utah senator Orrin Hatch is standing fully behind whatever President Trump decides. He’s just happy the President is reviewing it. Senator Hatch says, “I commend the President for acting decisively to right the wrongs of his predecessor. I’m prepared to support whatever recommendation Secretary Zinke offers to the President at the conclusion of a thoughtful and inclusive review process.”
Hundreds of Native American tribal members have gathered this weekend in the area around Bears Ears. It’s called their summer gathering. It includes things live dancing and rug weaving. The group wants to keep Bears Ears as a national monument.
