MAGNA, Utah (ABC4 News) – A popular math teacher at Cyprus High School received a Purple Heart during the schools football half-time ceremonies Friday night.
Retired Marine Corporal John Angell proudly walked toward cheering fans after receiving the longest standing medal in the military, the purple heart. He’s a man of few words, but the crowd is not forgetting his sacrifice while serving three tours in Iraq.
After being wounded in combat, Angell came home with a traumatic brain injury, medically discharged from the Marines. Overcoming great odds, Angell turned his life around and is now a beloved math teacher.
Angell said he was not expecting the Purple Heart, nor the ceremony held in his honor but also said he owes it all to his wife April.
“All the work and everything she went through to make this happen, it just means the world to me,” Angell said.
