KAMAS, Utah (ABC4 News) A child died after he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest Wednesday, Summit County officials said.
Summit County Sheriff deputies responded to a home off State Route 248 in the Kamas Valley just before 6 p.m. on the report of a 11-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Deputies provided life saving measures, but the 11-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries. Detectives are investigating how the firearm was accessed and how it discharged, but the sheriff’s office says the incident appears to be a “tragic accident.”
“Our hearts are broken, and we mourn with the family of the little boy,” said the sheriff’s office in statement. “Hug your loved ones often, keep them near and tell them you love them”
The boy was later identified as 11-year-old Cash Cover of Kamas.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article stated the boy was 10 years old. Authorities corrected his age when his name was released Thursday.
