Suspected Carjacker Charged With 1st Degree Murder In Fatal Crash

Anthony Santos Cruz

FARMINGTON (ABC4 Utah News) – The man who police say crashed a stolen vehicle into an innocent driver has been charged with her murder.

28 year old Anthony Santos Cruz was released from Intermountain Medical Center in Murray on Friday and immediately taken to the Davis County Jail where he was booked in on a charge of 1st Degree Murder and three counts of Felony Aggravated Robbery. His booking photo shows Cruz still in his hospital gown with his left arm in a sling.

He is accused of carjacking two vehicles at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The second one was a black Volkswagen SUV which officers say he used to flee from police before colliding with a silver Infiniti at Interstate 15 and Parrish Lane in Centerville. The Infiniti’s driver, 21 year old Jazmyn Jeppson, a recently returned LDS missionary from  Farmington, died at the scene.

“I would like to be able understand why this happened,” Centerville Police Chief Paul Child said at a news conference Friday. “I think we know a lot about what happened but the question is why. And it think there’s really no answer to that. This was a senseless tragedy.”

Cruz’s alleged accomplice in the first carjacking, 22 year old Michelle Vigil, was charged with one count of aggravated robbery.

Centerville and Kaysville Police are still interviewing possible victims and say more charges are possible against Cruz and Vigil.

Meanwhile Jazmyn’s family says she would want them to forgive. Her uncle, Jeff Howard, read a prepared statement at Friday’s news conference.

“Jazmyn lived life to the fullest and would only want the focus to be on faith, family and forgiveness,” Howard said. “We know she is with her Father in heaven and will continue to do what she has done throughout her life and that is to simply serve.”

Jazmyn’s family and friends attended her viewing Friday night at an LDS chapel in Kaysville. Her funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
