What do chocolate, beer and broccoli have in common?

Utah Success Stories

(ABC4 News – Farmington, Utah) What do you get when you combine carbon, hydrogen and oxygen?
I asked Mike and Jennie Carlson, owners of Green HoriZen, for some insight. This married dynamic duo call each other “Ed Duderino” and “Boss Babe”, so it wasn’t surprising as Mike as they told me “C21, H30 and O2…that is my final answer. She said yes, so I must be okay.”

The Carlson’s aren’t chemist, but they are advocates for a natural product called CBD. Jennie told me; “CBD is in black pepper, it is in dark chocolate, cocoa, ca-caw, however you want to say that, it’s in broccoli and kale. It’s in hops. Mother’s breast milk is full of CBD.”

According to a National Institute of Health Article, “The Endocannabinoid System as an Emerging Target of Pharmotherapy” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2241751/#R810), Cannabinol, also known as CBD, has well documented therapeutic properties to help with anxiety and inflammation.

There is some confusion about CBD that Jennie tries to clear up; “Our product has zero THC, so you don’t have to worry about getting high, or getting arrested or failing a drug test. Is it illegal? Due to the 2014 Farm Bill it is legal in all 50 states.”

Green HoriZen is a rag to riches story, that now has over 3000 distributors nationwide.  Mike shares the story of their journey; “When we started we had about 200 bucks a broke down car and just a few months from basically homelessness. I always say, if we knew how hard this was going to be we never would have started. But now that we’re here it would be impossible for me to want to stop.”

The Harvard Medical School Blog (https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) wrote that “the strongest scientific evidences for those using pure CBD oil is its effectiveness treating childhood epilepsy syndromes.”

Mike gets emotional sharing the person story of seeing this first hand, with a family that moved to Utah with their 7-year old daughter to be closer to Green HoriZen.

He gets out his phone and shows me video of this little girl and tells me; “Her Mom has gone from posting videos of her having seizures and holding her daughter to posting videos of her walking 10 or 12 steps unassisted. That’s what makes us go.”

The Carlson’s believe in what they are doing; “It’s good to feed your family, but the warm fuzzies are where it’s at.”
