WASHINGTON CITY (News4Utah) Students in southern Utah are preparing for a new school year at a brand-new school.
"That's what I'm amazed at. How many people we have coming from out of state into Washington County, and it's just booming," said Brian Stevenson, Principal at the new Crimson Cliffs Middle School.
As the St. George urban area continues to be the fastest growing area in the country, the Washington County School District is preparing to welcome 600 students for their first year at Crimson Cliffs Middle School in Washington City.
"It's going to take the pressure off of our Desert Hills Middle School, and our Pine View Middle Schools," said Steve Dunham, with the Washington County School District.
The completed school cost $25 million, has 3 floors and 30 classrooms. The district isn't stopping there.
"You'll see right next door we have the high school under construction that's going to open next fall, and just a few blocks north of here we have an intermediate school that is also under construction, that will open next fall to take the pressure off all of those adjoining schools, because we really are growing quickly down here," said Dunham.
The new schools will all have additional safety features to protect students such as double doors that direct people into the main office before entering the school.
"Parents and students will come in, and the doors will be locked and will direct them right to the main office, where we'll have an opportunity to help parents or students check in and make sure that they're accounted for and then we are able to buzz them into the school for access," said Stevenson.
To help with future growth, the school district is working a bond for the November ballot.
"We're going to ask taxpayers to freeze the tax rate at today's level, and that will allow us to generate another $125 million without raising taxes. We can still get that money to do additional growth, additional improvements on buildings, and safety and security," said Dunham.
The new school has science labs, smart projectors, and the library has a full view overlooking the Pine Valley Mountains.
