Cedar High School picks mascot to replace ‘Redmen’

Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC4 News)- Starting this fall the students at Cedar High School will no longer refer to themselves as “Redmen”, instead they have selected the nickname “Reds”.

In February the school board decided to retire the mascot at the end of school year, and in January, the high school committee voted 17-7 in favor of changing from the previous, “Home of the Redman” identity, which it had been used since the 1940s.

A transition team was created to help with the process.

On March 26th the students were presented with nine potential mascots: Reds, Titans, Aggies, Iron Wolves, Iron Miners, Tribe, Ranchers, Rockies, Royals.

The students voted and Reds came in as the winner followed by Royals and Titans.

The transition team says school colors and other elements reflecting the school’s traditions and heritage will be preserved during the change.

“The transition team feels that it is time for everyone to move forward,” a press release stated. “Now that a decision has been made, it is time to let the Cedar High School community get about the business of educating students and graduating the senior class of 2019 in a positive and enthusiastic manner.”
