Skyridge, Lehi to play for 5A football championship

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – In just its second year of existence, Skyridge will be playing for a state high school football championship.

The Falcons erased a 26-7 deficit and upset previously undefeated Corner Canyon Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium, 34-33.

Jayden Clemens hit Nathan Upham for a 23-yard touchdown with 1:02 left in the game to give the Falcons the win.

“We practiced it all season,” said Clemens of the game-winning play. “We played and prepared all week, and we were ready for any turnout. We knew it was going to be a good game. We all played our tails off and it showed.”

Corner Canyon lined up for a long field goal attempt on the final play of the game, but the holder fumbled the snap.

Clemens threw four touchdown passes, including an 86-yarder to Alex Palmer.

Zack Wilson threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns for the Chargers, who suffered its first defeat of the year.

Next up for the Falcons, crosstown school Lehi. The Pioneers used a potent offensive attack to hold off Springville, 41-21.

In one of the wildest first quarters of the entire season, Lehi and Springville combined for 48 points, with the Pioneers leading 27-21. But the Red Devils did not score a single point the rest of the game.

Cammon Cooper threw five touchdown passes, three to tight end Dallin Holker, while Carsen Manookin rushed for 163 yards and caught a touchdown pass in the victory.

Lehi avenged an 18-13 regular season loss to the Red Devils earlier this season.

“Coming from last game, we struggled on offense and we made some changes and obviously it showed on the scoreboard,” said Cooper, who completed 27 of 39 passes for 330 yards. “Everyone did their job, especially defense in the second half. We had a couple of missed tackles and big plays earlier in the game, but we stayed strong on offense and rolled the whole game.”

“I think the last two years we’ve lost in the regular season, especially this year, we had a few guys out, so this game means so much to us to be able to come out and play hard,” said Holker, who had 9 catches for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns. I just wanted to get that revenge but we got it when it counted so it was good.”

Cole Bowers rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns for Springville.

Despite being separated by just a few miles, Lehi and Skyridge have yet to play each other.

Lehi will be playing for its first state championship since 2000.

In the 4A semifinals, Mountain Crest used a strong defensive effort to shut down Stansbury, 17-7.

Beau Robinson rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Brady Hall threw one touchdown pass to Nick Nethercott, who had 99 yards receiving.

Tavita Gagnier scored the only touchdown for Stansbury.

Mountain Crest will now face the winner of Friday’s Orem-Sky View game for the 4A championship.
