SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Luis Silva scored at the end of the first half ,while Jefferson Savarino scored at the end of the second half, as Real Salt Lake defeated Vancouver at home Saturday night on a rainy night at Rio Tinto Stadium, 2-1.
After losing starting defenders DeMar Phillips and Marcelo Silva to first half injuries, RSL broke through late in the firs half.
Deep in first-half stoppage time, Silva gave Real Salt Lake (2-2-1) the lead on his first goal of the season on an assist from Brooks Lennon. Silva handled Lennon’s pass on the box, turned and fired a left-footed blast that deflected off the feet of Vancouver defender Jakob Nerwinksi for the goal.
RSL made that lead stand up until the 88th minute, when Savarino gave RSL an insurance goal it needed, tapping in a ball on a pass from Corey Baird. Damir Kreilach sent the ball in, and Baird, making his first career MLS start, made a perfect back pass to Savarino, who found the back of the net for the first time this season.
“Our mentality was very good tonight,” said head coach Mike Petke. “With two guys going out and two guys coming in, they had mental fortitude. And for the rest of the team to continue to work with a switch like that, I thought was very good.”
Brek Shea pulled Vancouver (3-2-1) to within a goal with a stoppage-time strike on his third goal of the season, but RSL held on for an important home win.
It is the second consecutive home win for RSL, which defeated the New York Red Bulls, 1-0 on March 17th.
“I think we take what the other team gives us.,” Silva said. “If I have to stay up top to disturb the two center backs I will do that. Today we did a good job of shifting around to create space for other players. Every game is different we’ll have to see how New York plays.”
RSL next plays at New York FC on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
