Seven puppies, mother dog abandoned, reward offered

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 UTAH) – A $5,000 reward has been offered by the Humane Society of Utah for information leading to the arrest of the person or people who left seven puppies in a plastic tote and their mother, Carmen, scratching to free them.

“She was kind of frantically trying to get at her puppies, scratching the plastic tote and a Good Samaritan found and saw that,” says Stephanie Beller with the Humane Society of Utah.

It happened at the Coppergate Apartments located at 8870 South State Street in Sandy on Sunday.

After seeing the puppies, that person called Sandy City Animal Control.

“They were brand new. The umbilical cord was barley detached. So ya they were not 48-hours-old, they were tiny,” Beller adds. “They left them in the cold in a plastic tote. They could have suffocated in the plastic tote. They could have frozen to death if we had a snow storm that day. It was really good that a Good Samaritan found them in time.”

Beller is a Foster with the organization. She says there should never be a reason for someone to do this. The Humane Society of Utah will take any dog, no questions asked.

“That person decided to do the coward thing and just discard her in the dumpster with her litter,” she said.

Beller doesn’t believe this was Carmen’s first litter because of how well she interacts with the pups.

“I think she was more of an inside dog and somebody just wasn’t good with sense and didn’t know how to deal with seven puppies cause its quite a bit of work,” she said.

Work that will now have the help of a foster family as police search for the person who did this.

It will still be a couple of months before any of the dogs are adopted out.

If you know anything about this case or why these dogs were left by a trash you are asked to call the Sandy Animal Services at 801.352.4450 or Humane Society of Utah at 801.261.2919.
