SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Sam Johnson and Damir Kreilach scored and Real Salt Lake snapped a four-game skid with a 2-1 victory over Orlando City on Saturday night.
The win was RSL’s first since March 9th as the team improved to 2-4-1 on the season.
Johnson opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his first MLS goal. Johnson slipped to the ground while chasing a ball from Kreilach, but recovered his footing and sidestepped a defender to get open for the finish.
“I feel very cool scoring my first goal in the league,” Johnson said. “I’m so grateful and I’m so happy. First of all I give thanks to the team and especially to Albert who passed me the ball. I really appreciate it and it’s good to score a goal as a striker.”
RSL carried that 1-0 lead into the half, before doubling it in the 55th minute.
Kreilach, back from a red care suspension, smashed home a cross from Jefferson Savarino to give RSL some much-needed breathing room.
Orlando City got on the board in the 81st minute of a free kick from Nani, but RSL was able to hold on for the three points.
“I thought it was a gritty performance at times, I thought it was a very well-played performance by us sometimes, and I thought it was a bit nervous sometimes,” said head coach Mike Petke. “But the end of the day, it’s three points.”
“Every one of us knows that we didn’t start very well,” Kreilach said. “We want to just leave those negative things and those games behind us and to try to start a new season. Because of that, for us it was like home opener, first games. Three points are amazing.”
RSL next plays at FC Cincinnati Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
