SEATTLE (ABC4 Sports) – Real Salt Lake’s early season slump is growing deeper.
Nicolas Lodeiro scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute on a pass from Christian Roldan, as the Seattle Sounders handed Real Salt Lake its fourth straight loss, 1-0.
With the defeat, RSL falls to 1-4-1 on the season.
Sam Johnson had a few scoring opportunities for RSL, but could not finish. Jefferson Savarino had the best chance to level the match in the 73rd minute, but his shot hit the post.
“We had more than two or three chances,” head coach Mike Petke said. “It was more like five or six chances. Savarino cut in twice, in the first half, Sam almost on the goal line. It comes down this. I’m getting sick and tired of coming out here after games and say ‘we deserved more out of the game.’ For me we all need to grow up a little bit. Yes, we’re a young team, but it has to be pushed into the past and we have to be a bit more savvy in certain situations, we have to get a bit more clinical.”
“It was just about, stay in it, stay in it, we’re going to get another chance to get into this game and get some points,” said RSL captain Kyle Beckerman. “We just didn’t get it over the finish line. But there is a lot of good stuff, Seattle is a really good team, especially at home, and we’ll try and build off of this.”
Real put four shots on frame, but Stefan Frei was up to the task, making four saves.
Nick Rimando made two saves in defeat.
RSL, which has played four of its first six games on the road, comes home to host Orlando City Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
