Prank targets iconic “U” over University of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – For commencement week, the word “imagine” has been displayed on a banner above the iconic U overlooking University of Utah.

But, early Thursday morning, campus police noticed someone had covered up part of the banner so that it read: “Vagina U.”

“Imagine U is the University of Utah’s brand statement,” said Annalisa Purser, a university spokesperson

“We believe that first you imagine, and then you can do. Anything you can imagine, you can do here at the University of Utah,” said Purser.

So imagine waking up Thursday morning to find the banner language altered.

“I don’t really know what to say about that,” said student Sean Finnegan.

“It’s pretty disrespectful — a little funny, I guess — but the fact that the whole valley can see that and there are kids down here, not a huge fan of it,” added Finnegan.

Around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, campus police alerted university officials that the prank had happened. Sheets had been strategically placed over parts of the “I,” the “M” and the “E” to make the banner appear to read “Vagina.”

The sheets were removed within 30 minutes, according to Purser, a university spokesperson.

“It’s a prank — it didn’t cause any permanent damage to the sign,” said Purser. The person or people responsible haven’t been caught, and are not actively being pursued by the university because there was not any permanent damage, said Purser.

“I think it’s kinda funny,” said Luciana Johnson, a recent graduate.

But, she wonders: “I guess I wanna know their reasoning behind it.”
