Rep. Curtis introduces ‘plan for protection’ of Bears Ears

Congressman John Curtis is introducing a bill that he says is a “plan for protection” for the modified Bears Ears.

The plan provides an archeological resource protection unit and includes a ban on mineral extraction in the area. As part of the bill, law enforcement will be required to watch over the monument.

Monday, President Trump signed proclamations to drastically reduce the size of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

The Hopi, Navajo, Ute, Mountain Ute and Zuni tribal governments plan to file that lawsuit to stop the reductions of the monuments, which they call an attack on their people, culture and history.
