Bill to eliminate straight-ticket voting advances at Capitol

Politics

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) – A bill that would eliminate straight-party voting in Utah is making strides on Capitol Hill.

Representative Patrice Arent (D-Salt Lake City) is the sponsor of House Bill 259, Straight Ticket Voting Prohibition Amendments.

Rep. Arent has been trying to run the bill for years, and this year it’s finally gaining traction. She said the straight-party option is leading to a lot of confusion for voters.

“Fewer states have this, no western state does, and when you have mail-in ballots there’s a lot more confusion. When you are voting on a machine it can alert you, you’ve forgotten to vote in the following races, did you mean to forget these races? A mail-in ballot doesn’t do that,” said Arent.

The bill has passed the House and a Senate committee and is waiting for a debate in the full Senate. Arent has never got the bill out of a House committee before this year.
