Police release surveillance video in connection with St. George church fire

ST. GEORGE (ABC4 News) – St. George police continue to investigate a fire at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake center that was under construction.

St. George police released video of an SUV they say was in the area of the stake center around the time it was reported. Police do not consider the occupants of the vehicle suspects. They would just like to talk to them.

The fire broke out Saturday at the stake center that was about two to three weeks away from opening. At the time, authorities brought in an accelerant dog from central Utah to help them out.

Police said it is an active investigation and they continue to check on various leads. ABC4 News learned Tuesday that evidence collected at the scene is being sent to the Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms crime lab.

“Those results may tell us if an accelerant was used and if so, what type of an accelerant. And those results can take up to two weeks to get back…. We do have an active investigation going on and we are following up on all the leads we are receiving. But we do continue to ask for the public’s help,” said Tiffany Atkin with St. George Police Department.
