Online safety tips

News
How much you choose to share about yourself (or others) online is a personal choice, but it’s a risk-based choice.

“Think about the worst thing that might happen, and how you might recover from it,” says Tamara Deening, the Assistant Professor of Computing at the University of Utah.

She offered some security tips for staying safe online:
  • Consider turning on 2-factor authentication for your email.
  • Keep your software updated with the most recent patches.
  • Run antivirus software (there are free options).
  • Be careful what email attachments you open.
  • Log in to web sites by going there directly (instead of clicking links).
  • Close extra computer tabs.
  • Use only reputable websites.
  • Always withhold as much information as possible.
