Ogden City Council email is a scam, authorities issue warning


OGDEN, Utah (ABC4 News) – Ogden City Police Department has issued a warning about a scam circulating regarding the Ogden City Council.

In a statement issued on the Ogden Police Department Facebook, police said they are investigating an email that reads as though it is a warning from the Ogden City Council.

“The email uses scare tactics claiming drastic increases in crime and provides a link for the reader to purchase a residential home security system,” said the statement. “THIS IS A FRAUD AND IS FALSE.”

Police further stated phishing attempts are recognizable by the following features:

1. Offers things that are too good to be true
2. Attempt to get you to act using a sense of urgency
3. Have suspicious hyperlinks or attachments 
4. Come from unusual senders

Ogden police stated that in 2018 serious crime in Ogden saw a 20.1% reduction and 2019 is continuing on a downward trend.

“We live in a big city, so as always be smart and develop good safety habits for you and your families,” said the statement.

They also shared graphics to show several legitimate ways Ogden City keeps its citizens informed and can be contacted.
