NYPD detective killed in friendly fire shooting during robbery

A veteran detective with the New York Police Department was shot and killed by friendly fire while responding to a robbery late Tuesday night.

Detective Brian Simonsen, a 19-year veteran with the NYPD, responded to a robbery in Queens with another sergeant.

According to the NYPD, the robbery suspect had what appeared to be a handgun. Simonsen and the sergeant then fired their weapons and Simonsen was hit by the fellow officer’s bullet.

“Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it’s because of the actions of the suspect that Detective Simonsen is dead,” said NYPD commissioner James O’Neil.

Simonsen was 42-years old.

The sergeant that was with him was also injured. He is in stable condition as of Wednesday morning.
