MLK Rally & March @ 9:00am at  Westminster College
Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a rally and march through Sugar House. The event is happening on Jan. 18, 2016, at 9 a.m., in front of Converse Hall. The Martin Luther King Jr. Campus-wide Commemorative Program will feature a lecture by Robin DiAngelo, Ph.D., titled “Racism’s Adaptations Since the Civil Rights Movement.” It will follow the march and will be held in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall of the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts at 10:30 a.m. The program will include a screening of a documentary film trailer about black social change in Utah. The documentary is the capstone project of Westminster graduate student Marian Howe-Taylor.
 
Utah Valley Day of Service in Honor of MLK @ 10:00am at BYU Wilkinson Center
Volunteers from Utah Valley will gather for Community Outreach Day on Jan. 18, 2016. Service projects across the Provo and Orem area will be done in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Registration for the event will take place in the BYU Wilkinson Center from 8:30 AM-9:15 AM. There will also be a brief program which includes musical numbers by the Genesis choir and a presentation about Dr. King’s dream and message of service.  The keynote speaker for the event will be Super Bowl champ and motivational speaker, Burgess Owens. From 10:00 AM, 25-30 service projects will take place. These projects will conclude at 1:00 PM. Participants are encouraged to document their experience using the hashtags #cod2016 and #mlkday.
 
Red Cross MLK Day World Record Attempt @ 10:00am
In commemoration of Martin Luther King Day on Monday volunteers across America and across Utah will attempt to install as many smoke alarms as possible to set a world record for most smoke alarms installed in one day. For over a year now the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has been installing free smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information all across the country in an effort to reduce home fire deaths by 25% over the next few years and the campaign is working. Contact the Red Cross in your area for more info. 
 
Playworks gets Youth to Serve on MLK Day @ 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Over one hundred fourth and fifth graders from schools throughout the greater Salt Lake area will serve as volunteers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The youth volunteers will create games and kits meant to comfort and entertain patients staying at Primary Children’s Hospital. They join hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.
