How to be green and save green without compromising style

Midday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah(News4Utah) Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. It’s a day to celebrate and take care of Mother Earth. This year’s focus is to end plastic pollution. Plastic pollution poisons and inures marine life, disrupts human hormones, and clogs our waste streams and landfills. Home and Lifestyle Influencer Kathryn Emery, joined Nicea DeGering, to talk about how you can be green and save green, but not compromise your style.

Emery says there are ways to be environmentally friendly while still looking stylish. Remember when you wanted to be green, but you felt like the quality wasn’t good, or you were paying premium prices? She says this is not the case anymore.

Emery focuses on three areas of saving energy: clean air, saving energy and saving water. You can do it with products that are the best in class, but they look beautiful while having the latest technology built into them. Plus, they are affordable. Another added benefit is saving money on utility bills as well.

Emery says most people know by now that LED light bulbs are the latest and more innovative technology. They save 85 percent over traditional incandescent bulbs. But, she says the performance is what most people weren’t a fan of. They could not get the right color or brightness.

Now, there are three colors of light bulbs: soft white (relaxing), bright white (doing activities) or daylight (reading), all in one light bulb. People were buying different bulbs based on the room and how much light they needed.

She says if you love your existing fixture, but want a dimmer or motion light, there’s no need to call an electrician to switch out the fixture anymore. Now these bulbs have that feature built in. You can switch to dim, dawn to dusk, and motion activated, with sensors in the actual light bulbs. You get energy saving benefits built into the light bulb.

Now, to yard work. Ego Power Plus has a line of outdoor power equipment that she says is the coolest on the market. It is self propelled and runs on a 56 Volt Lithium Ion Arc technology. It is the most advanced battery in the industry. Plus, they emit no emissions at all.

Next, paint. The easiest way to improve a home is to paint a room, or even just an accent wall. This can create a new look & feel. It is an easy weekend project, and something anyone can do. Paint can be use to create different moods and effects that either open up a space, or give a room the energy you’re looking for. Look for a paint with no VOC and a paint and primer in one. This will make painting easier. Behr Marquee has one-coat coverage. You can paint a bedroom in just one hour! One gallon can also cover 100 square feet. That’s about the size of a two car garage. So, you’re using less time, less paint, and getting the job done. The paint has no VOC (volatile organic compounds), which creates harmful air. Studies have shown that levels of several organics average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors for several hours after activities such as paint stripping.
