Parkinson’s is a degenerative movement disorder, which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function.
A new program called ‘Rock Steady Boxing’ is a non-contact boxing workout designed to attack symptoms of the disease.
Many participants have improved their quality of life, and some have stopped using their canes and even decreased medications. Overall most boxers with Parkinson’s report greater strength, more endurance, improved balance and a sense of hope and belonging that they didn’t have before.
The program involves regular exercises, such as stretching, bicycling, running, jump-roping, push-ups, balance and lots of non-contact boxing. These are designed to help participants deal with tremors, poor balance, loss of vocalization abilities and muscle rigidity in limbs and trunk.
‘Rock Steady Gyms’ are located inside Legends Boxing in Lehi and Riverton.
