OREM, Utah (ABC4) – A man has died after a fatal shooting involving police officers on Sunday night.
Orem Police say the suspect is a 41-year-old male, but his identity is not being released at this time.
Police first responded to a domestic violence situation in Orem around 10:46 p.m. The suspect and his 68-year-old father were engaged in a dispute that resulted in physical injuries. Police say the suspect attacked his father with a knife before fleeing the scene.
Officers from multiple agencies located the suspect after a short search. When officers tried placing the man into custody, he was uncooperative. That’s when police say he began charging at officers while brandishing weapons in both hands.
Police fired shots at the oncoming man. Medical attention was provided immediately, but the suspect died due to his injuries.
“He was swearing up a storm, pacing back and forth he kind of seemed agitated, then he went down…I could hear police telling him to drop the knife” says Casle. She tells ABC4 that she lives next door to the man’s parents and says seeing the frightening incident was a first for her.
“It’s one thing to watch it on tv in the shows, it’s another thing to watch it right in front of you” explains Castle. But luckily the swift response from Police officers assured her the situation was under control.
Castle adds “my thought was they had it taken care of, i felt safe, and there’s no reason to worry my mom.”
Lt. Nick Thomas of Orem police says the officers involved were not injured and Utah County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team is handling the investigation from here. However, police say it’s unknown how this incident between the suspect and his father began.
“So there’s no threat to the community, officers were wearing body cam they’re fully cooperating with the investigation,” says Thomas
The suspect’s father had sustained cuts on his neck area. He was transported to a local hospital for injury treatment and is now recovering.
The Utah County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team will be handling the investigation. All officers involved were wearing body cameras during the deadly shooting. The investigation results will be announced at a later date.
ABC4 will update this story as more information becomes available.
