Man Critically Injured After Exiting Speeding Truck On State Route 201

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News) – One man is in police custody and another is in the hospital after a bizarre series of incidents along State Route 201 Thursday evening.

The Utah Highway Patrol says it started with a black pickup truck speeding and driving erratically westbound on Highway 201 just after 6 p.m. They say things got really serious when that truck sideswiped a car at 6000 West, running it into the cable barrier.

Minutes later while the truck was still speeding, a male passenger exited the vehicle at 8000 West and rolled several feet down the pavement. According to Lieutenant Beau Mason of the Utah Highway Patrol, the 30 year old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“We don’t know why the passenger exited the vehicle,” Lt. Mason said. “Whether it was at their own will or by force but that subject exited the vehicle at a high rate of speed and sustained very serious injuries obviously when they hit the roadway.”

The driver of the pickup truck headed east and eventually crashed into another vehicle at 7200 West and 2800 South.

“His vehicle wrecked again off 7200 West in UPD’s jurisdiction,” Lt. Mason said. “They were able to take him into custody after several other events that happened. I’m still getting the details on those.”

A Salt Lake Unified Police news release stated that the driver of the pickup truck attempted to carjack several other vehicles and enter a home before he was arrested.

“We’re cooperating with UPD at this time,” Lt. Mason said. “UHP is going to handle the investigation. We’re working very closely with UPD to make sure we have all the facts and all the charges appropriate for this individual.”

No one in the two cars struck by the pickup truck was seriously injured.
