Lone Peak pulls away from Pleasant Grove to win 6A state championship, 61-44

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – They say beating a team three times in one season is difficult to do.

Not for Lone Peak.

The Knights beat arch rival Pleasant Grove for the third time, but this was obviously the most important victory, as it gave Lone Peak the first ever 6A boys basketball title, 61-44.

Steven Ashworth led four players in double figures with 15 points, while Max Brenchley had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, as the Knights erased a 4-point halftime deficit to win its first state title in four years.

“That’s the thing about these boys is that all year they’re really good at making adjustments,” said head coach David Evans. “And percentages usually win out. They’re good shooters so the shots started falling.”

The Knights outscored the Vikings in the second half, 43-22,

Jaxon Pollard finished with 13 points, while Jackson Brinkerhoff added 12.

“Last year definitely stung a lot and throughout this year we just wanted to make it back and have another chance,” Brenchley said. “We did that and we just wanted to make sure that we could just play as hard as we can and just give it everything we have. For a lot of us it’s our last ride, so we’re just happy to get it done.”

Casey Brown led Pleasant Grove with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
