SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A young missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has died.

Church Spokesman, Daniel Woodruff, announced the passing of 20-year-old Elder Joao Victor Rodrigues Gondim on Tuesday. Woodruff says Elder Gondim was serving in the Portugal Lisbon Mission and that he had been serving since July 2017.

Elder Gondim, who is from Sao Paulo, Brazil, died on Monday after he collapsed during a soccer game with some other missionaries. His cause of death is unknown.

The statement from the Church reads “Our hearts go out to his family as they mourn his passing. We pray they will feel peace and support during this difficult time. The Church is working to provide counseling to those missionaries who witnessed this tragedy.”
