SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – A woman has died and her passenger was injured in a rollover on I-80 early Sunday morning in Salt Lake City.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andrew Battenfield, a 19-year-old woman, identified as Sofiea M. Maya-Flores, was driving a Nissan Versa west on I-80 near milepost 137 just after midnight when for an unknown reason she veered to the left and hit a concrete barrier.
Troopers believe the vehicle rolled end over several times before coming to rest on it’s wheels.
Both Maya-Flores and her passenger, an 18 year old female, were both wearing seat belts.
Maya-Flores sustained a fatal head injury from the roof of the vehicle. The passenger was transported to the U of U Hospital in serious condition.
Impairment and speed are being investigated as factors in this fatal crash.
Troopers said that while all lanes are open at this time, they may close later for further investigation. At the time of the crash the roads were dry. After the crash weather moved in and hampered the initial investigation.
