SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Several individuals called the police to report a woman abusing her child while eating at a restaurant in Trolley Square Sunday night.
According to arresting documents, dispatch received multiple calls regarding child abuse to the Old Spaghetti Factory at about 5:30 p.m.
Witnesses said Susan Marie West, 65, was seen smacking a pre-teen child in the face and arm over a dozen times while they were inside the restaurant, documents state.
Witnesses said she grabbed the child by her ponytail and dragged her out of her seat during an outburst by the child.
Another witness said he saw West put both hands around the child’s neck and attempted to force her into the car while the child was screaming.
During an interview with police about the allegations, she admitted she had hit the child and said: “but what do you expect me to do?”
West told officers this has happened before and similar outcomes have occurred.
West was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and the child was taken into state custody.
A background check for West shows she does not have any criminal history in Utah.
