MURRAY, Utah (ABC4 News)  – Matthew Thomas heard gunfire and started running to safety.

Thomas was at the Fashion Place Mall in Murray Sunday afternoon.  At around 1:30, police received numerous 911 calls of shots being fired at the mall.

Thomas was at the food court when the shots ran out.

“I heard two or three shots,” he recalled.

He joined others who were running towards the exit doors.

“Half the people didn’t understand what was going on and other people started yelling “gunshots, gunshots, gunshots,” Thomas said.

He was outside when he decided to turn around and go back in.  He was headed towards Dillards at the south end of the mall.  That’s when he spotted a man and a woman who had been shot.

“I saw the two on the ground injured,” he said. “The young lady had a gunshot wound to the leg.  I believe the guy got shot in the back.”

He arrived as police were coming upon the couple as well.  But he still managed to converse with the couple.

“They were talking,” Thomas said.  “They were coherent.

I was asking them (who shot them) and the guy said he didn’t know.”

The woman also told Thomas she didn’t see the shooter. But he said the injured man did see something.

‘I asked the guy where did the shooters go,” Thomas recalled.  “And he said they ran out the door where they were laying at.”

Despite hours of searching inside the mall for the shooter or shooters, police never found those responsible for the shooting.

Thomas said he stayed with the couple until they were taken to the hospital

“I was actually holding both of their hands and I was telling them ‘you’ll be okay, your going to be fine,’” he said.  “Basically they were more scared and nervous.

Thomas said he doesn’t see himself as a hero but reacted in a way he hoped others would.

“If it would have been me who had been shot, I would want someone to be there to help me,” he said.
